The Invention / How It Works

Often referred to as the “Beekeeper’s Dream”, Flow was created out of a desire to make harvesting honey easier for the beekeeper and to lessen its impact on the bees.

“I really didn’t like squashing bees or disturbing the hive when harvesting, so I thought ‘there has to be a better way'."
- Cedar Anderson

For those that don’t know, harvesting honey used to be pretty labour intensive. After a decade of tinkering, our patented Flow Frame technology is the most significant advancement in beekeeping since 1852. It is now possible to simply turn the Flow Key and watch as pure, untouched, unprocessed fresh honey flows right out of the hive and into your jar.

Precision Manufacturing & Premium Timber

The Flow Honey Harvesting Shelf Bracket kit allows original Flow Hive owners to retrofit their existing hives for convenient, height-adjustable collection of honey.

Laser cut and crafted from premium Western Red Cedar, the Flow Honey Harvesting Shelf Bracket kit makes collecting your honey even easier than before!

We are using Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) as it is a beautiful timber with a remarkably fine and stable grain structure, and is sustainably sourced in North America.

Timber included in this product is made from naturally grown resources – each Harvesting Shelf may be slightly different in character. Please see our FAQ for more information on our natural timber characteristics.

The Flow Honey Harvesting Shelf Bracket kit, comes with easy to assemble hardware and can be stored safely when not in use. Although there are minor differences in the sizing of this product, you can assemble it in the same way as the Flow Hive 2 harvesting shelf brackets, please find assembly guide here.

Safety, Care & Maintaining Your Flow Honey Harvesting Shelf

Apply a coat or two of timber sealant to bring out the lustre of this beautiful timber, and help it last even longer.

Beekeeping is a labour of love. As with all animal husbandry, it’s a pastime which requires knowledge, skill and dedication and which carries with it inherent risks. Sooner or later, all beekeepers get stung. Some people have severe allergies to bee stings, so please be aware of the potential hazards when considering whether beekeeping is right for you.

  • From Go to Flow in under three months! I have had great success with the Flow Hive- harvested four frames for 12 kg of honey.

Read, study, use the Flow Forum, follow instructions and you won't have problems putting the Flow Hive together and getting bees to work happily and harvesting with no stress.

  • We did our first harvest on Sunday, we yielded 8.5 kg from 3 frames, so we are very excited.
We used simple glad-wrap over the bucket to stop potential pilfering. And not knowing for sure if you 'just turn a tap and get honey' we put it straight into a bucket with a gate and a sieve on top, just in case. We then poured out of gate from bucket into jars in the kitchen, in the a/c.

  • I've kept bees before so I have a general idea of what's involved, and like so many people, I've hated disrupting their cosy home and having to kill so many bees to get at the honey.
I have a million thank yous to the man and his dad for building these hives.
Sheesh, I'm crying again. It's just so wonderful.
