The Invention / How It Works

Often referred to as the “Beekeeper’s Dream”, Flow was created out of a desire to make harvesting honey easier for the beekeeper and to lessen its impact on the bees.

“I really didn’t like squashing bees or disturbing the hive when harvesting, so I thought ‘there has to be a better way'."
- Cedar Anderson

For those that don’t know, harvesting honey used to be pretty labour intensive. After a decade of tinkering, our patented Flow Frame technology is the most significant advancement in beekeeping since 1852. It is now possible to simply turn the Flow Key and watch as pure, untouched, unprocessed fresh honey flows right out of the hive and into your jar.

Sizing Options

Our Flow Frames are available in 4 sizing options to give you the flexibility of tailoring your Flow setup to exactly suit your needs.

If you have an existing 8 frame Langstroth hive you have the option of adding 3 Flow Frames or 6 Flow Frames to your super. For beekeepers who have an existing 10 frame Langstroth hive, it is possible to add 4 Flow Frames or 7 Flow Frames to your super.

Choose 3 or 4 Flow Frames to create a Flow Hybrid setup. This option allows you to combine Flow technology with traditional wooden frames in the Super, giving you the opportunity to experience the ease of harvesting with Flow and the ability to collect delicious fresh honeycomb.

Alternatively, fill your Super with 6 or 7 Flow Frames to optimise your honey harvesting potential.

How much honey can I harvest?

Each Flow Frame holds approximately 3 kg (6.5 lb) of unprocessed honey when full, this can increase if the bees really build each frame out.

Bee prepared with extra jars in case your first one overflows!

Watch as fresh, pure unfiltered honey Flows from the back of the hive directly into your own jars. No filtering, no mess.

For more information on honey collection see our FAQ.

Precision Manufacturing & Maintaining your Flow Frames

The patented Flow Frame technology allows you to tap honey directly from your hive. Made in Australia, from durable, highest quality food-grade, BPA and BPS-free plastic– Flow Frames have taken the beekeeping world by storm.

Store Flow Frames in a dry, cool, dark location out of direct sunlight when not in use. You can find further information on cleaning recommendations and pest treatment suitability in our FAQs.

Safety & Care

Beekeeping is a labour of love. As with all animal husbandry, it’s a pastime which requires knowledge, skill and dedication and which carries with it inherent risks. Sooner or later, all beekeepers get stung. Some people have severe allergies to bee stings, so please be aware of the potential hazards when considering whether beekeeping is right for you.

WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS ARE SAYING

  • This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to totally revolutionise an industry. And, yes, I want a Flow Hive!

  • Within 2 days of the harvest, the bees had removed the cappings and resealed the cell walls with wax, ready for the next batch of honey. My husband is so delighted, that he does not want to extract honey by any method other than Flow frames in the future!

  • We really love having the flow hive and how it brings so many people together. Mild winter in Brisbane Australia (Coorparoo) has allowed us to harvest 6kg over the last month from 2 frames. All remaining frames appear to be full also. We have now taken over 40kg since we started robbing in January. Has been a real success and the hive is thriving.

  • Hello Flow crew,
Just thought I’d let you know we harvested from our Flow for the first time down here in Apollo Bay in Southern Victoria and even though we’ve seen all the videos, we were still gobsmacked when the honey just came pouring out into our jar!

We got around 10kg after just a month of them using it (getting ready to shut it down for winter) and are enjoying giving away jars to friends. What an amazing innovation – the kids and I harvested in shorts and thongs… here are some pics!
