The Invention / How It Works
Often referred to as the “Beekeeper’s Dream”, Flow was created out of a desire to make harvesting honey easier for the beekeeper and to lessen its impact on the bees.
“I really didn’t like squashing bees or disturbing the hive when harvesting, so I thought ‘there has to be a better way'."
- Cedar Anderson
For those that don’t know, harvesting honey used to be pretty labour intensive. After a decade of tinkering, our patented Flow Frame technology is the most significant advancement in beekeeping since 1852. It is now possible to simply turn the Flow Key and watch as pure, untouched, unprocessed fresh honey flows right out of the bee hive and into your jar.
Integrated adjustable hive stand – optional extra
The Flow Hive 2 is manufactured with a 3º slope towards the honey outlets for optimal honey harvesting, created by two footblocks attached to the front of the base.
As an optional extra, we have created this handy integrated adjustable bee hive stand for those who don’t have a hive stand, to enable the bee hive to be freestanding at your perfect hive location.
This special edition allows you to control the level of your bee hive even on uneven surfaces.
Simply wind each individual leg to the required height, using the handy inbuilt spirit levels located at the side and rear of the base as a guide. The spirit levels are custom made to be aligned when the correct slope has been achieved.
Priced at $89.
*This accessory is only compatible with Flow Hive 2 and cannot be added to the Flow Hive Classic.
Precision Manufacturing & Premium Timber
The patented Flow Frame technology allows you to tap honey directly from your hive. Made in Australia from durable, highest quality, food-grade, BPA and BPS-free plastic – Flow Frames have taken the beekeeping world by storm.
The Flow Hive 2 Paulownia wooden components are carefully crafted in our Australian boutique warehouse – consequently, each production run is limited.
Created from sustainably grown, FSC certified, super lightweight, and durable, paulownia wood, using precision laser manufacturing.
Paulownia often gets compared to the light-weight yet strong properties of western red cedar. It’s a great timber source, as it grows to harvest in as little as 5 years, making it an icon for sustainability. Which is what bees are all about.
To ensure your hive lasts a long time outdoors, two good coats of quality weatherproof sealant such as exterior house paint is a must. You can be as creative with the paint job as you like!
Timber included in this product is made from naturally grown resources – each hive will be slightly different in character. Please see our FAQ for more information on our natural timber characteristics.
How much honey can I harvest?
Harvest up to 18 kgs (40 lb) of honey when the super is full. Watch as fresh, pure unfiltered honey Flows from the back of the bee hive directly into your own jars. No filtering, no mess.
Each Flow Frame holds approximately 3 kg (6.5 lb) of unprocessed honey, this can increase if the bees really build each frame out. Bee prepared with extra jars in case your first one overflows!
For more information on honey collection see our FAQ.
Safety, Care & Maintaining Your Flow Hive
We recommend painting Paulownia hives with at least two coats of good quality exterior paint for the longest and most effective protection. Read more on treating your Paulownia Flow Hive here.
Beekeeping is a labour of love. As with all animal husbandry, it’s a pastime which requires knowledge, skill and dedication and which carries with it inherent risks. Sooner or later, all beekeepers get stung. Some people have severe allergies to bee stings, so please be aware of the potential hazards when considering whether beekeeping is right for you.
