For the first time, we're offering a limited release of Scratch & Dent Cedar  Flow Hive 2 (6 Frames) for those who are a bit handy and looking for an excellent deal.

Our in-house manufacturing team have very high QC standards, which means that when packing our premium hives, some usable pieces get put aside.

Sustainability is a core value for all of us at Flow. We offer these Flow Hive 2s to those who also believe that it's better to make good use of our natural resources and are prepared to tinker a little. If tinkering isn't for you then please see our premium A-grade Flow Hive 2 here.

So what can you expect to find in our Scratch & Dent hives?

All timber included will be in useable condition, however, as the name suggests, you may find some scratches and dents in the timber and perhaps some minor imperfections with small timber knots. You may also need sand or make minor adjustments with a chisel to assemble your hive. Please scroll down for some photos of the types of imperfections you might find. Many of the imperfections are on the inside of panels so once your hive is built, it should look just as good as our premium hives. And trust us – the bees won't notice!

Includes Premium Grade Flow Frames

The timber ware may be scratch & dent, however, this hive contains 6 premium generation 2 Flow Frames, featuring our revolutionary honey harvesting technology.

Invented by father and son team Stu and Cedar Anderson, our patented Flow Frame technology is the most significant advancement in beekeeping since 1852. It is now possible to simply turn the Flow Key and watch as pure, untouched, unprocessed fresh honey flows right out of the beehive and into your jar.

The Invention / How It Works

The Invention / How It Works

Often referred to as the “Beekeeper’s Dream”, Flow was created out of a desire to make harvesting honey easier for the beekeeper and to lessen its impact on the bees.

“I really didn’t like squashing bees or disturbing the hive when harvesting, so I thought ‘there has to be a better way'."
- Cedar Anderson

For those that don’t know, harvesting honey used to be pretty labour intensive. After a decade of tinkering, our patented Flow Frame technology is the most significant advancement in beekeeping since 1852. It is now possible to simply turn the Flow Key and watch as pure, untouched, unprocessed fresh honey flows right out of the beehive and into your jar.

Integrated adjustable hive stand

The Flow Hive 2 is manufactured with a 3º slope towards the honey outlets for optimal honey harvesting, created by two footblocks attached to the front of the base.

As an optional extra, we have created this handy integrated adjustable beehive stand for those who don’t have a hive stand, to enable the beehive to be freestanding at your perfect hive location.

This special edition allows you to control the level of your beehive even on uneven surfaces.

Simply wind each individual leg to the required height, using the handy inbuilt spirit levels located at the side and rear of the base as a guide. The spirit levels are custom made to be aligned when the correct slope has been achieved.

Priced at $89.

*This accessory is only compatible with Flow Hive 2 and cannot be added to the Flow Hive Classic.

Precision Manufacturing & Premium Timber

The patented Flow Frame technology allows you to tap honey directly from your hive. Made in Australia from durable, highest quality, food-grade, BPA and BPS-free plastic – Flow Frames have taken the beekeeping world by storm. Flow Frames included with our Scratch & Dent hive are premium grade.

The Scratch & Dent Flow Hive 2 is created from usable timber pieces which have not passed our strict QC standards when packing our premium products.

All timber included will be in useable condition, however, you may need to glue, sand or adjust with a chisel to assemble your hive. But once it's together, it should look just as good as our premium hives.

Crafted from premium Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) which is a beautiful timber with a remarkably fine and stable grain structure, and is sustainably sourced in North America.

Timber included in this product is made from naturally grown resources – each hive will be slightly different in character. Please see our FAQ for more information on our natural timber characteristics.

How much honey can I harvest?

Harvest up to 18 kgs (40 lb) of honey when the super is full. Watch as fresh, pure unfiltered honey Flows from the back of the beehive directly into your own jars. No filtering, no mess.

Each Flow Frame holds approximately 3 kg (6.5 lb) of unprocessed honey, this can increase if the bees really build each frame out. Bee prepared with extra jars in case your first one overflows!

For more information on honey collection see our FAQ.

Safety, Care & Maintaining Your Flow Hive

Apply a coat or two of timber sealant to bring out the lustre of this beautiful timber, and help it last even longer.

Beekeeping is a labour of love. As with all animal husbandry, it’s a pastime which requires knowledge, skill and dedication and which carries with it inherent risks. Sooner or later, all beekeepers get stung. Some people have severe allergies to bee stings, so please be aware of the potential hazards when considering whether beekeeping is right for you.

  • I put the flow hive honey super on my hive on July 10th, 9 days ago. Much to my amazement I looked through the side window and saw that the outside comb is about 2/3 filled.
The flow hive is a brilliant innovation, and makes producing honey incredibly easy for the beekeeper, and easy on the bees.
A friend who looked on was in awe, and is now considering purchasing his own flow hive!
