The Invention / How It Works

Often referred to as the “Beekeeper’s Dream”, Flow was created out of a desire to make harvesting honey easier for the beekeeper and to lessen its impact on the bees.

“I really didn’t like squashing bees or disturbing the hive when harvesting, so I thought ‘there has to be a better way'."
- Cedar Anderson

For those that don’t know, harvesting honey used to be pretty labour intensive. After a decade of tinkering, our patented Flow Frame technology is the most significant advancement in beekeeping since 1852. It is now possible to simply turn the Flow Key and watch as pure, untouched, unprocessed fresh honey flows right out of the hive and into your jar

Precision Manufacturing & Premium Timber

The patented Flow Frame technology allows you to tap honey directly from your hive. Made in Australia from durable, highest quality, food-grade, BPA and BPS-free plastic - Flow Frames have taken the beekeeping world by storm.

Crafted from premium Western Red Cedar, using precision manufacturing and paired with a full set of 6 Flow Frames, this is one sweet hive!

We decided to use Western red cedar (Thuja plicata) as it is a beautiful timber with a remarkably fine and stable grain structure, and is sustainably sourced in North America close to our major customer base, reducing transport mileage.

Timber included in this product is made from naturally grown resources - each hive will be slightly different in character. Please see our FAQ for more information on our natural timber characteristics.

How much honey can I harvest?

Harvest up to 18 kgs (40 lb) of honey when the super is full. Watch as fresh, pure unfiltered honey Flows from the back of the hive directly into your own jars. No filtering, no mess.

Each Flow Frame holds approximately 3 kg (6.5 lb) of unprocessed honey, this can increase if the bees really build each frame out. Bee prepared with extra jars in case your first one overflows!

For more information on honey collection see our FAQ.

Safety, Care & Maintaining Your Flow Hive

Apply a coat or two of timber sealant to bring out the lustre of this beautiful timber, and help it last even longer.

Beekeeping is a labour of love. As with all animal husbandry, it’s a pastime which requires knowledge, skill and dedication and which carries with it inherent risks. Sooner or later, all beekeepers get stung. Some people have severe allergies to bee stings, so please be aware of the potential hazards when considering whether beekeeping is right for you.

Check out this Flow-sponsored safety pamphlet covering common beekeeping safety risks and first aid responses.

WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS ARE SAYING

  • A few years ago my husband decided he'd like to try his hand at beekeeping. His grandfather had all of the equipment but hadn't kept bees for about 5 years.
He organised to get a nucleus hive from a local apiarist but he never received the call and this was really a blessing in disguise. About 2 years ago I visited a place that had one of your hives on display & showed it to my father. As huge honey fans (he & I) he decided he'd give beekeeping a go & looked into your product. Dad's pretty technologically challenged (hence why I'm emailing you) so my husband looked up your webpage & watched some videos & showed Dad & he decided to take the leap & buy one of your hives.
We weighed up the costs & realised your hives are definitely better value than buying the rest of the harvesting equipment & having to harvest the honey.
So it became a joint venture between my Dad (who has the space & fruit trees & gumtrees etc) & my husband (who is happy to read every piece of information they need).
After their first harvest, they were so amazed & impressed with how easy everything was & the quality of the honey that Dad has now bought 5 more boxes (now 5 in total including the most recent which is yet to get bees in it).
They can't speak highly enough of your hives & love that they can approach the hives & harvest the honey or just check on how the frames are filling without disturbing the bees.
It's fantastic! We are loving every bit of honey we get.

  • I'm very much supportive of the idea to lessen stress for bees and I believe the Flow Hive makes them happier.

  • I successfully harvested 6-full Flow Hive frames on Saturday, Sep 30, 2017. The bees were amazingly calm and after about 1 1/2 hours, I had over 50 pounds of beautiful dark Texas honey!

  • Hello Flow crew,
Just thought I’d let you know we harvested from our Flow for the first time down here in Apollo Bay in Southern Victoria and even though we’ve seen all the videos, we were still gobsmacked when the honey just came pouring out into our jar!

We got around 10kg after just a month of them using it (getting ready to shut it down for winter) and are enjoying giving away jars to friends. What an amazing innovation – the kids and I harvested in shorts and thongs… here are some pics!
