What makes the Hybrid Hive different from a Classic Hive?

The Flow Hybrid Super is specially modified to house 3 Flow Frames centrally, which are flanked by 2 timber foundationless frames on either side so the bees can draw their own fresh honeycomb.

This has the added benefit of offering you the ability to move wooden frames between the super and brood box which can be useful for hive management.

The side observation window allows you to watch your bees building their honeycomb, and the rear harvesting door (smaller than on a Classic Super), allows you to observe and harvest your Flow Frames.

Fresh honeycomb!

The Flow Hive Hybrid is a wonderful addition to any apiary, providing the ability to collect delicious honeycomb. Organically built by nature’s little engineers and constructed in natural-and-perfect hexagon shapes, honeycomb is bound to entice and inspire those who you choose to share it with.

Perfect for families & children who may never have experienced the delight of fresh, warm honeycomb from bees, which—in addition to being delicious—makes a great gift for friends and neighbours.

Honeycomb is also a firm favourite with gourmet food-lovers, it can be served on cheese platters, as a lush breakfast or after-dinner spread, or enjoyed on its own for its chewy sweet simplicity.

The Invention / How It Works

Often referred to as the “Beekeeper’s Dream”, Flow was created out of a desire to make harvesting honey easier for the beekeeper and to lessen its impact on the bees.

“I really didn’t like squashing bees or disturbing the hive when harvesting, so I thought ‘there has to be a better way'."
- Cedar Anderson

For those that don’t know, harvesting honey used to be pretty labour intensive. After a decade of tinkering, our patented Flow Frame technology is the most significant advancement in beekeeping since 1852. It is now possible to simply turn the Flow Key and watch as pure, untouched, unprocessed fresh honey flows right out of the hive and into your jar

Precision Manufacturing & Premium Timber

The patented Flow Frame technology allows you to tap honey directly from your hive. Made in Australia from durable, highest quality, food-grade, BPA and BPS-free plastic - Flow Frames have taken the beekeeping world by storm.

Crafted from sustainably harvested Australian Araucaria - also known as Hoop Pine, using precision laser manufacturing and paired with a full set of Flow Frames, this is one sweet hive!

Araucaria is a premium Australian native cabinet timber, highly regarded for its stability & durability. To ensure it lasts a long time outdoors, two good coats of quality weatherproof sealant such as exterior house paint is a must. You can be as creative with the paint job as you like!

Timber included in this product is made from naturally grown resources - each hive will be slightly different in character. Please see our FAQ for more information on our natural timber characteristics.

How much honey can I harvest?

When the super is full you can harvest up to 20 lb (9 kg) of Flow honey, in addition to the four honeycombs produced in traditional frames from your Flow Hive Hybrid.

Each Flow Frame holds approximately 6.5 lb (3 kg) of unprocessed honey, this can increase if the bees really build each frame out. Bee prepared with extra jars in case your first one overflows!

For more information on honey collection see our FAQ.

Safety, Care & Maintaining Your Flow Hive

We recommend painting Araucaria hives with at least two coats of good quality exterior paint for the longest and most effective protection. Read more on treating your Araucaria Flow Hive here.

Beekeeping is a labour of love. As with all animal husbandry, it’s a pastime which requires knowledge, skill and dedication and which carries with it inherent risks. Sooner or later, all beekeepers get stung. Some people have severe allergies to bee stings, so please be aware of the potential hazards when considering whether beekeeping is right for you.

WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS ARE SAYING

  • How generous! I have to say that we are SO impressed with your company and your products!

My neighbor and I both have your entire set-up and so far it is working like a charm! My neighbor has done all of the ordering in the past, but we are both beginning bee keepers and you have made this so much fun and I have to say ‘easy’!

    THANK YOU!

  • I need to take a Minute to thank the Flow Hive team for coming up with such and amazing Honey Super.
It has been our second year with The Flow Hives and it's just Amazing how the girls don't Evening know you are drawing the honey out. They don't get injured or stress and so much LESS work than removing a super and cutting the wax cappings off each side of the frames and spinning all the frames and let's not forget the clean up. We have harvested the Flow Hive twice this summer and the girls are just working to fill the frames up again.
Of course you still need to do regular Brood Box inspections, which always tells a bee keeper a whole lot of info.

Flow Hive Is The WAY TO GO .

    Thanks Again Flow Hive.

    Steven

  • We did our first harvest on Sunday, we yielded 8.5 kg from 3 frames, so we are very excited.
We used simple glad-wrap over the bucket to stop potential pilfering. And not knowing for sure if you 'just turn a tap and get honey' we put it straight into a bucket with a gate and a sieve on top, just in case. We then poured out of gate from bucket into jars in the kitchen, in the a/c.
    Beeutiful!

  • We just harvested our first flow hive honey! It was an incredible experience!
